Frequently
Asked Questions
Naturally, the beginning of the conversion process involves many questions and concerns about your future.
We’re here to answer your questions, alleviate your concerns and doubts, and help to make everything simple, clear, and transparent – in short, everything we can do to help you start this exciting new chapter of your life on the right foot…
Is there a mandatory dress code for the classes?
No. Our approach is to encourage learning without forcing anyone to make changes.
Is conversion through Nativ an Orthodox conversion?
Yes, conversion through Nativ is the state-approved conversion process, which has been determined by the Israeli government to be an Orthodox conversion. This conversion is accepted by all branches of Judaism.
Do Nativ staff monitor and examine the conversion students during their studies?
Absolutely not! We have no desire or right to do so. The relationship between us and our students is based on complete trust.
Is this conversion recognized by the State of Israel?
Yes, 100%. Nativ’s conversion preparation process is authorized and recognized by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, the Ministry of the Interior, and all government institutions.
Can I get married at the Rabbinate when the process is complete?
Absolutely! In fact, if you have a partner, there is no need to contact the Rabbinate at all, because the Conversion Court can register your marriage. And all this, free of charge!
I've successfully completed the process. How do I get recognized as Jewish by the Ministry of the Interior?
Around 1-2 months after completing the process, you will receive a Conversion Certificate. You can then present this certificate to the Ministry of the Interior to change your religion to “Jewish.” However, this process usually happens automatically. We recommend waiting a few months and then requesting a “Registration Summary” from the Ministry of the Interior’s website, which should contain your updated details.
What languages are the classes held in?
Hebrew, Russian, English, Amharic, Portuguese, and Spanish.
When are the Civilian Program classes held?
Dozens of classes are held every day, all over Israel, from HaTzor HaGlilit to Eilat. Every class starts at a different time, so please contact us to find the closest class that is relevant to your needs.
Do I have to get circumcised and be immersed in a mikveh?
If you are already circumcised, you will undergo the Hatafat Dam Brit ritual – a painless procedure involving drawing a single drop of blood. Men who are not circumcised will be required to undergo circumcision. Immersion in a mikveh (ritual bath) is required for both men and women.
How long is the final Conversion Court hearing?
The hearing lasts about an hour. You will be accompanied by your teacher, who will be there to support you at all times.
What happens if I fail at the Conversion Court?
Naturally, not everyone passes on their first try. However, in our experience, all those who genuinely want to convert will manage to pass in the end! If you don’t pass the first time, someone from Nativ will contact you a few days later with guidance about your next steps in the process.
Important: Nativ studies prepare students very well for the Conversion Court hearing. It’s recommended to arrive in a calm, relaxed state of mind and to put things in proportion – because even if you don’t pass now, you will pass very soon. All you need is basic knowledge and a genuine desire…
